Indirect or reported speech

We replaced the direct speech of Max Giebel into indirect or reported speech (telling from a third person perspective by using the subordinate conjunction: dass)

example: (remember last year’s color coding: subject - red; direct object - green; indirect or Dative object - blue)

"Ich mag die Stadt sehr."
Er sagt, dass er die Stadt sehr mag.

(the "first person subject" changes into "third person" and the conjugated verb (adapted to the new subject!) moves to the very end of the sentence)


"Ich bin in Anklam geboren."
Er sagt, dass er in Ankam geboren ist. 

"Unsere Familien und Freunde leben hier."
Er sagt, dass ihre Familien und Freunde dort leben.
(as above, plus the possessive pronouns need to be adjusted accordingly)

"Ich habe mit meiner Tochter gespielt
Er sagt, dass er mit seiner Tochter gespielt hat.

"Ich habe ein Jahr lang einen festen Arbeitsplatz gesucht".
Er sagt, dass er ein Jahr lang einen festen Arbeitsplatz gesucht hat.
(the whole verb expression is hat gesucht, but the conjugated part is
hat, that has to go to the very end)


(If a sentence is out of the regular order: subject, predicate, object
and that creates irritation, first rearrange into that regular order
and then build the subordinate sentence structure)

Für seine Frau Sabine ist es manchmal schwierig.
Es ist manchmal für seine Frau Sabine schwierig.
Er sagt, dass es manchmal für seine Frau Sabine schwierig ist.

Then please look at the handout for subordinate conjunctions and read
through the "wenn" examples. We won’t get to the subjunctive with it
(sorry Herr Ferate (we need to keep stuff for future lessons . . . ),
but we can get started with distinguishing the temporal from the
conditional meaning of ("if" - "wenn") and reintroduce the use of
"als" for its special function - yeah!
